Sometimes you need to just get out there and ride. I have been itching to get out and snowmobile after our first ride on October 26th. As you may have already read, our October 26th ride was awesome. Tons of snow, and beautiful weather. Couldn't have asked for a better first ride.
Well I have been biting at the bit to get out on the snowmobile since then. So when I found out that it was going to storm all weekend, I started salivating. Now I had to figure out how much snow was actually going to fall. The weather reports said anywhere from 15 to 20". I thought to myself; "that could be enough."
Snotel is a system of sensors placed in the mountains to report how deep the snow is. Check it out here. I looked at my favorite riding area and it said it still had 9" left over from the October 26th storm. That should of made a good base for the new snow to fall on top of. The signs where looking good.
So the decision was made... We where going. Right before we left Snotel said it had 20" up there, and it was still snowing. Maybe it will be ok. We loaded all the machines up and hit the road.
When we got up there it became clear that the Snotel report probably wasn't correct. Sure there where pockets of about 20" or so, but for the most part there was less than 12". As a matter of fact we had to pretty much stick to trails because it would be too dangerous to be any more adventurous. On the trail our ski's carbides cut right through to the rocky path on several parts.
So what do we get out of it other than break in miles on my brothers new snowmobile? We get a better base for the next storm to come fall on. Apparently there is one slated to hit a week from now. So if you haven't gotten your snowmobile out yet, you are already two rides behind. The first ride you missed out big time, it was epic. The second ride would have been perfect to take your kids on, or maybe your spouse who doesn't like all the powder riding.
Are you going to miss out on more riding by not getting your sled ready? I think you are crazy if you do.
Thanks for reading,
DPS
