The cost of going on a diet

It can be expensive to lose weight. No I am not talking about that extra jelly role you have aquired over the years from eating greesy food.  I am talking about making your snowmobile, motorcycle, or 4 wheeler lighter.  The name of the game is Weight vs Power.  You can have as much power as you want in the world, but if your machine feels heavy you are going to get tired.  When you are tired you make mistakes.  When you make mistakes you get stuck or Hurt or dead.  Hopefully it never results in injury or death, but you get my drift.

Not only is it important to be light for the sake of conserving energy, but if you are climbing that steep hill that everybody gathers at to try to conquer then weight plays a factor on making it to the top.  My 165 lb brother will out climb me on the same machine every time because I weigh 200 lbs. But weight to power ratio is nothing new.  We all know that it is important.

In the snowmobiling world the Ski Doo Summit XP was the first to break the 3 pounds per  HP ratio.  This was a huge break through in the sport.  Polaris was soon to follow.  Polaris lately is more focused on weight reduction than anything else.  Ski Doo seems to be focused on innovating the riding style and chassis.  When the two come together you are going to have one sweet snowmobile.

For those of us who don't have the money to fork out on a new factory snowmobile that is lighter than the year before, there are solutions in composite materials that are pretty cool. One company that specializes in composite chassis is C3 power sports.  They built a snowmobile that was way lighter than stock even when it was completely full of fluids.  It was a 4-stroke 1200 cc ski doo.  It only weighed 499 Lbs.  Impressive to say the least.  Here is a video of the project.

Even though it probably isn't as expensive to change out some of your sled with carbon components when compared to buying a new snowmobile.  It still can cost a pretty penny if you go nuts.  If you change out your whole chassis and get all new panels and everything it can even cost more than buying that new machine.  So, to sum up... It is expensive to go on a diet.
